Annet Nekesa has been named national Athletics personality of 2011 by the Uganda Athletics Federation.

Nekesa beat off competition from All Africa 5000m gold medallist Moses Kipsiro who came second.

She was recognised for her outstanding performance in 2011 where she won two gold medals in 800m and 1500m races at the Africa Junior Athletics Championships in Gaborone, Botswana.

She beat Kenyan Nancy Chepkwemoi in the 1500m final  at the May 2011 games to clinch double gold. Nekesa also won 800m gold at the All Africa Games in Maputo Mozambique.

She also worm the Uganda Cross Country senior race in a record 28.19 minutes beating  household names like Dorcus Inzikuru.

After the honours last evening, James Mugeni, national athletics coach said Uganda has a lot of potential in athletics. He appealed for more funding and interest from the government in developing the athletics sport.

The ward will be sweet for Nekesa, after coming a close second to Susan Muwonge in the 2011 Uganda Sports Press Association Sports personality of the year.
