Countries benefiting from Lake Victoria are being blamed for being reluctant to clear the water hyacinth, which continues to be a danger to aquatic species in Lake Victoria.

This comes after a section of East African legislators raising concern over the lack of responsive action towards addressing the free-floating perennial aquatic plant on the lake.

The water hyacinth is reported to be largely covering up the Nyanza gulf in Kenya which is part of Lake of Lake Victoria and affecting fishing activities.

The region’s chairperson of the council of ministers Musa Sirma says, an immediate response by the partner states to clear off the water hyacinth is needed to save the lake.
