The speaker of parliament  Rebecca Kadaga is to launch a campaign in her home district of Kamuli to educate people about how best to tackle the persistent problem of jigger infestation in Busoga region .

Under the auspices of the Lohana Indian Association, the one week campaign will be launched on 9th March in the sub county of Butansi.

The campaign is called a home improvement drive and will handle a wide spectrum of health issues ranging from dental to eye problems.

She told journalists at parliament that locals will be educated on how to observe basic hygienic standards which are key in eradicating jiggers.

Kadaga said the health drive will also be rolled out to the sub county of Kitayundwa.

Late last year, Kadaga led a government emergency response to the spread of jiggers in the Busoga sub region after the blood sucking parasites had claimed the lives of a numbers of people in Mayuge district.

At the height of the jigger pandemic last year, Kadaga blamed local leaders for failure to ensure hygiene at local levels.

She ordered local leaders in each of the nine districts of Busoga to pass bylaws enforcing weekly smearing of floors with cow dung and anthill soils.
