Kamuli district has been cited by child and maternal health activists as one of the top districts with high infant mortality deaths due to lack of access to health centers.
According to the United Nations Children’s Fund, Kamuli has been singled out as one of the districts with difficulties in access to health centers due to lack of ambulances in the district to transport patients, particularly sick children and pregnant mothers.
It is against this background that UNICEF, together with World Vision, has partnered with the local communities to operate two motorcycle ambulances to offer transport services to the health centers at no cost.
A health specialist at UNICEF, Dr. Francine Kimanuka says this initiative will help the district, known to have the lowest indicators of child and maternal health.
The Speaker of Parliament, who doubles as the area MP, Rebecca Kadaga, lauded UNICEF for its efforts, saying this will greatly improve health service delivery.
Mbarara and Kyenjojo have already benefitted from the same project.
