Uganda Health News: Spinal cases overwhelm Mulago

MulagoNational Referral hospital has reported that it is currently over whelmed by the number of spinal cases it receives.

According to available statistics from the spinal unit in the hospital indicates at least 50 cases are received per week. Last year alone over 195 spinal patients had spinal surgery.

The in charge of the spinal unit also a consultant orthopedic surgeon Dr Mallon Nyati says the main cause of the backbone complications are accidents, infections, old age and falls.

DrNyiti notes that the major cases they handle are from road accidents.

Meanwhile over 11 spinal patients have received free medical surgery.

The surgeries have been conducted by the Duke University in conjunction with the spinal unit.

A consultant surgeon at the Duke University Prof William Richardson reiterated their commitment to support the hospital in handling spinal complications.
