Over 40% of malnourished children admitted at the Mwana Mugimu children's ward at Mulago hospital are HIV positive.
This is revealed by the head of the Mulago Hospital Mwana Mugimu unit, Dr. Elizabeth Kiboneka.
Dr. Kiboneka says most of the infected babies brought to the ward suffer from severe malnutrition, compared to those that are HIV negative.
She says most of the parents of these children do not feed them well, which makes them prone to other infections and diseases such as tuberculosis.
Dr. Kiboneka says the ward ensures that these children are given utmost attention since they have weak immune systems.
Meanwhile, she also reveals that most of the babies brought in here belong to teenage mothers between the ages of 17 and 25 years.
Dr. Kiboneka laments that most of the parent neglect their children, which contributes to their malnutrition.
