Leaders from Pader district have decried the poor state of Pader District Referral Hospital.

Pader Woman MP, Lowila CD Oketayot says that the hospital, which was opened in 2009 but has not been rehabilitated.

The district is one of the areas in Northern Uganda badly affected by nodding disease, also known as river epilepsy.

A team of officials from the Ministry of Health is in the area to assess the magnitude of cases of nodding disease.

According to statistics, over 2000 people, particularly children, have been affected by the disease has since last year, with at least 200 said to have died from the disease.

Oketayot adds that there is inadequate staff to handle the many patients who flock the hospital for treatment.

She says with the district grappling with over 1000 cases of nodding disease, it is imperative that government intervenes and sends specialized medical personnel to handle the issue.

Oketayot says this is one of the pertinent issues she will raise with the ministry officials during their current tour of the region.
