The Inter Parliamentary has lauded the Uganda Parliament for its role in the reduction of maternal and child mortality rates in the country.

Uganda has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world, with close to 500 out of 100, 000mothers dying every day while giving birth.

Speaking at celebrations to mark Safe Motherhood day in Kamuli district, the Senior Advisor for Maternal, Neo natal and child health at the IPU, Sue Mbaya explained that the union wants to get involved in issues of maternal health due to the growing number of deaths of mothers in the world, particularly in Africa.

Mbaya reveals that the IPU has established a project on maternal and child health which has kicked off in Uganda due to its commitment in Parliament to reduce maternal mortality rates.

She says that the objective of the project is to support Parliaments to take more effective action on maternal and child health.

Mbaya adds that there are various activities at the global level, including taking the message to the grassroots areas, and all put these discussions at global level so as it filters down to national and sub national level.

She says it is really important that Uganda parliament made itself available and self-nominated to make a request to IPU to come and offer its support.
