Uganda Health News: Government asked to work on regional hospitals

The deputy director of mulago hospital Dr. Doreen Birabwa has appealed to government to improve the functionality of all regional and district hospitals and health center IV.
Dr. Birabwa says if regional referral hospitals are able to deliver quality services, it will help in decongesting Mulago national referral hospital.
She was today speaking to members of parliament on the social services committee who went for an on the spot tour of Mulago hospital.
Dr. Birabwa said that one of the problems faced by the hospital is over congestion because every patient wants to go to mulago even on simple matters like malaria and headache which can be handled by other health centers.
She said that mulago is supposed is to be a referral hospital where complicated problems are handled but many people come over with minor illnesses because health centers where they stay are not meeting their health needs.
Dr. Birabwa noted that One of the most congested wards in the hospital is the labor suit where they receive about 80 patients per bday yet the hospital has got few mid wives and space to handle the big number of expectant mothers.
She adds that each cubic in the ward is supposed to host 6 beds but due luck of space more than required numbered are admitted to the extent that even the corridor are all filed with patients.
The tour by the MPs is intended to find the problems faced by the hospital management in order to propose solutions to the government.
