Uganda Health News: Cancer cases high in Ngora district

The people of Ngora district have appealed to the government to extend a hospital to the area to provide specialist health services to the people there.

The Woman MP for Ngora district, Jacqueline Amongi says many specialist health services are only available in far off Soroti district hospital or Mulago.

She gives the example of cancer screening and testing which can only take place in Sororit or Mulago, yet many local people don’t have the means to go to these far off health centers.

Amongi says this has left many people in Ngora to suffer silently with chronic diseases like cancer because of limited or no diagnosis and treatment.

She was speaking yesterday at a cancer screening and testing exercise carried out in Ngora by the the Uganda Cancer Institute from Mulago hospital.

Amongi says many women in the district are suffering from and dying of cervical and breast cancer, while incidences of prostate cancer are also high among men.

She is appealing to the government to extend specialist health services near to the people by building and or equipping health centers in the district with adequate staff, equipment and medicines.
