The Opposition in Parliament has written to the Ministry of Finance, calling for the halting of the construction of new houses for the police.
The project in question is part of the redevelopment of police barracks in the Kampala Metropolitan Police Area under a Public Private Partnership with investors.
Speaking to the media at Parliament today, the Leader of Opposition, Nandala Mafabi noted that although the development approach is through a PPP, there is no law in place that governs implementation of such projects.
Mafabi further said he had received information that most of the consortium of companies that have bided do not have strong financial and managerial background and there may be a probability of the land being sold and the companies vanishing.
Kumi County MP, Patrick Amuriat said that the project cannot go on unless a law governing PPPs is passed by Parliament, as well as financial background of companies bidding for the project.
Masaka Municipality Matthias Mpuuga says that the relocation of about 30,000 families without providing alternative areas will create unnecessary Internally Displaced Camps.
Mpuuga adds that the development of the police housing plans should fit into the proposed greater Kampala Metropolitan Traffic Master Plan which has not yet been concluded.
They have now written a protests letter to the Ministry of Finance to halt the project until a legal framework is put in place
