Election monitors have condemned the violence that was witnessed in the just concluded Jinja Municipality East by elections.

The police yesterday arrested over 30 people from different incidents of fighting between opposition and NRM supporters.

The Citizens Coalition for Electoral Democracy in Uganda today raised concern over what it termed as the massive spill of violence which they say denied many citizens especially women, persons with disabilities and the elderly a chance to express their right to vote.

The coalition’s chairperson, Livingstone Ssewanyana calls upon the Electoral Commission and the Uganda Police Force to investigate these cases of violence in the shortest time possible and make public their report for action, with major focus on alleged cases of bribery and intimidation of voters.

Forum for Democratic Change candidate, Paul Mwiru was declared winner of the elections, beating closest rival NRM’s Nathan Igeme Nabeta by a 1700 vote margin.

The by-election was called by the Electoral Commission after the High Court nullified the election of Nathan Igeme Nabeta over voter bribery as questionable academic papers.
