As Uganda joins the rest of the world to mark World Wetlands day, East African member states are urged to avoid destroying wetlands at the expense of development.
The celbrations will be held under the theme Wetlands: Supporting tourism for our survival.
A member of the Agriculture, Natural Resources and Tourism committee at the East African Legislative Assembly, Hon. George Nangale says fast development in terms of infrastructure has left many wetlands encroached on, which in turn tampers with the water table.
Nangale says with the passing of the Trans boundary Ecosystems bill yesterday, partner states have the obligation to protect protected areas, including wetlands.
Over 570,000 hectares of wetlands in Uganda have been destroyed over the last 15 years, according to a Biomass study.
