Uganda Entertainment News: Government appeals to teachers not to strike

The minister for education and sports Jessica Alupo has assured teachers that government is handling their salary increase demands.

According to Alupo, contrary to claims by some MPs led by Kalungu west MP Joseph Sewungu that government failed to address the teachers’ grievances, all teachers’ the government is planning a gradual salary increase for teachers over the coming years.

Her assurance comes in the wake of another teachers’ strike expected to begin today as schools resume for first term of 2012.

The minister tells Journalists in Kampala that the ministry is in talks with the Uganda National Teachers Union (UNATU) leaders to avert the impounding strike.

 Alupo says government values teachers a lot and therefore cannot leave them to suffer when the education of the country depends on the welfare of teachers.
Meanwhile, Sewungu has summoned a meeting with teachers today in which he wants to incite them into boycotting classes until government gives them 100% salary increase.

But Alupo says this increment will be done in a phased manner spread in three years beginning with the 2012/2013 financial year where the government has promised to increase by 15%.
