Uganda Education News: Anti corruption modules to be in school curriculum
The ministry of Ethics and Integrity has agreed with the ministry of Education to incorporate corruption and other moral programmes in the school syllabus system.
In a statement issued to the media the Minister of ethics and integrity Dr. James Nsaba Buturo said incorporating corruption into the school syllabus system is the best long term solution to the thorny problem of corruption.
He says the arrangement will help empower young people who are the most vulnerable group to influences of corruption report cases of corruption.
The minister says the anticorruption institutions have failed to fight corruption because its members are quietly promoting it by failing to implicate the people involved in the act.
Buturo says the Government has started a program to strengthen Government anti corruption institutions with limited capacity to investigate and prosecute corrupt people.
He says Government will increase funding and Human resource personnel to the Inspector General of Government, the Director of Public Prosecutions and the judiciary so that corruption can be dealt with once and for all.
The minister urged the population to report all cases of corruption so that more money which would otherwise be stolen can be saved and spent on community development programmes like construction of schools, roads and health centers.
Corruption a major issue in Uganda has seen the arrest and trial of the three former ministers of Health Jim Muhwezi, Mike Mukula and Alex Kamugisha accused of embezzling GAVI and Global funds meant for the AIDS, Malaria, Tuberclosis and Immunisation programmes.
The World Bank estimates that Uganda has lost over 500 billion shillings due to corruption since NRM government come to power 22 years ago.
