Uganda Education News: Prisoners excel in PLE examinations

Luzira Upper Prison is celebrating the success of some of its inmates who excelled in the 2011 Primary Leaving Examinations.
The Prison Authorities say 7 of the prisoners who sat PLE got division 1; 31 Division 2; 13 passed in Division 3; 3 in Division U while 9 were in Division X, a 95% performance rate.
One of the inmates on remand at the prison for murder, Frank Semakula, was the best student after he scored Aggregate 8.
Semakula attributes his success to hard work and the efforts by the teachers who help the prisoners on a voluntary basis.
He says the prisoners did group work and discussions which helped them also excel
He says being the best performer has given him the zeal to study hard when he joins secondary school.
The head teacher of Upper Prison Primary School, Sentamu Robert lauded his students for the good performance, but called on government to provide assistance to the school, which he says currently lacks educational materials to enable the prisoners learn better.
