MPs on Social Services Committee have opposed  the proposal in the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Amendment Bill 2011 which seeks to remove term limits for Vice Chancellors and Dean of Faculties.

The MPs say the move will create a lot of problems if higher institutions of learning where positions may be politicized for one to serve for life.

The member of parliament for Mbarara Municipality Bernard Bitekyerezo who is also a Member of the Committee said the Vice Chancellors and Deans should be allowed to serve for only 8 years.

He says after serving eight years, they should give room to other people to also serve in the same positions.

The State Minister for Education in Charge of Sports Charles Bakabulindi who had appeared before the Committee to defend the Bill said the idea of removing term limits is a positive move because it will encourage hard work on ground that the person holding the office will be subjected to another scrutiny to justify ones performance while in office.
