Uganda Education News: Makerere celebrates improved academic ranking

Makerere University has promised to continue undertaking reforms that will improve its ranking position among the world’s top universities.
Dr. Vincent Ssembatya, Director, Quality Assurance, Makerere University says although recent ranks show Makerere is improving, the university needs is prepared to do more to once again be the beacon of best academic performance as it was in the past.
This follows results of the academic performance ranking that saw Makerere come 8th out of 59 Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) ranked in 18 African countries.
He says Makerere University’s improved performance is in part a result of its transition from a faculty-based to a collegiate university on 1st July 2011, which witnessed the review of the research function.

The University of Cape Town was ranked top in Africa and the 256th i the world. Harvard University ranked number one in the world.
According to a news release, URAP, established at the Informatics Institute of the Middle East Technical University in 2009, aims at developing a ranking system of world universities by academic performance that is more comprehensive in coverage.
