Uganda Education News: Government urged to address poor education

A cross section of Civil Society leaders are mounting pressure on government to address challenges being faced the by country’s education system.

The group today launched a cause code-named Citizens Actions for quality public Education to among others push government to improve teachers’ salaries and working conditions, children are fed at schools and more funding is  availed for the educating of pupils.

One of the group’s leaders, Rev. Dr. Zac Niringiye says they want capitation grants increased to at least 22,000 shillings per child each year from the current 5000 shillings per child per year in UPE schools.

They also want the elimination of ghost teachers, ghost pupils and ghost schools in the education sector, as well as reducing the school drop-out rate which now stands at 6 pupils of every 10 in the education cycle.

The coalition is made up of teachers in lawyers, religious leaders, human rights activists and ordinary Ugandans.
