Officials from the East African Community today put up a spirited fight to give powers to the Inter University Council to have a regional body to accredit universities in the East African region.
The East African Legislative Assembly committee on budget met with the Deputy Secretary of the EAC, Jean Claude Nsengiyumva, who asked the assembly not to pass the Inter University Council for East Africa Bill in its current form to give room for amendments by the council of ministers.
Nsengiyumva notes that the council wants the bill once passed into law, to give powers to the Inter University council to be able to regulate the education sector, through harmonizing education policies in partner states, as well as bring together national institutions.
In its recent sitting in Bujumbura last year, the Council of Ministers requested to study the Bill further after some members raised objections that if passed in its current form, the legislation would create a parallel system of accreditation since each partner state has an accreditation body charged with such responsibility.
