The Makerere University Vice Chancellor Professor Venansius Baryamureeba has dismissed claims by Dr.Tanga Odoi, the Chairman of the Makerere University Academic Staff Association that he (Baryamureba) is serving in that office illegally.

Quoting section 31 clause 2 of the University Act, Baryamureeba says that he was legally appointed to the Office of the Vice Chancellor by the relevant authorities as provided for under the Act.

Two weeks ago thDr. Tanga Odoi dragged the university council to High court challenging the continued stay in office by the vice chancellor Venansius Baryamureeba and his two deputies.

Odoi says the three were appointed in November 2009 by the council to serve for a temporally period six months but have continued to serve up to date.

Odoi wants court to declare Baryamureeba’s stay in office unlawful since his contract was never formally extended.

However Baryamureeba is assuring the students’ community and the entire public that there is no problem in the Makerere University leadership since he has been submitting performance reports for the last two and half years.

Addressig a press briefing at the University today, Prof. Baryamureeba also dismissed claims in some media houses that the land title for the main campus has been lost.

Baryamureeba said that the lands authorities have issued out the land title for only 10 acres of the university land in Katanga because of other 30 acres have not yet been cleared by court.
