Beginning March 2012, acquiring a SIM card for any mobile telecommunication provider in Uganda will be harder than it has been.
The Uganda Communications Commission says only registered outlets will send SIM cards as the government moves to regularise SIM card ownership by registering all SIM card users.
UCC executive director, Godfrey Mutabazi says the SIM registration exercise is aimed at ensuring SIM card holders are known by particular details as it is done in other countries to ensure safety and security.
He says the SIM card registration exercise will start off on March 1st and all SIM card owners must register their SIM cards with their service providers to avoid losing access to the SIM after the registration deadline of November 2012.
Mutabazi also said that the UCC is soon releasing a report on the operation of all telecom companies noting that they have received complaints from the general public about poor service delivery by the telecom companies.
