Uganda Arts News: Government applauded for stopping V-monologue
The government has been applauded for stopping Vagina Monologue, a film that was supposed to be shown during the 3rd International Film Festival that ended over the weekend at the Uganda National Theater.
The government through the media council intervened and stopped the film that was supposed to be shown on Saturday. The same body had stopped the play last year.
The Head of the married at Kasanga Miracle Center Church, Stephen Wako Muzinge said during a dinner to mark the International Day of the families held at Sheraton hotel in Kampala that the V-Monologue undermines values in the family.
Plays or films like the V-monologue can destroy society if not controlled by the authorities, he said, adding that government should do the same with pornographic materials in the media.
Wako Muzinge said that the media is importing barbaric western cultures like nudity, homosexuality and lesbianism into Uganda. He advised parents to play a big role in building society especially children who should be there to be taught, cared and loved by their parents.
Wako Muzinge, who was speaking on behalf of the parents during the Family Dinner to mark the Day of Families on Monday appealed to government to intensify checks on the media and what they run in the newspapers, television and radios.
He said that through Ministries of Education, that of Ethics and Integrity as well as that of Gender, Labour and Social Development, government can tame the vice that is likely to destroy the family institution.
Speaking on behalf of the youth, Leah Natukunda, a student of Seven Hill College expressed concern that parents are no longer have time for their children.
Sometimes we take months to see our parents yet we want to be loved, we want a hug in the morning, which we never get. We cannot learn to love when we do not get love from our parents, she told parent leaders including religious and political leaders.
The International Day of Families is marked annually on May 15 since 1994 to reflect the importance that the international community attaches to families around the world. This follows the September 20, 1993 United Nations General Assembly proclamation through resolution 47/237.
The Ministry of Gender, labor and Social Development in partnership with Family Life Network, a local Non Governmental Organization are organizing the activities to mark this years Day of the Families under the them Leadership and Families: Challenges and Opportunities.
The Executive Director for Family Life Network, Stephen Langa said that by highlighting the challenges and opportunities for leaders to maximize their impact on the family, this years observance will go a long way in mainstreaming the family and family Issues on the national agenda.
He appealed to government to allocate appropriate resource and give policy reviews that will protect, support and strengthen families. At least 200 parent leaders attended the Family Dinner.
