As President Yoweri Museveni continues to insist on giving away part of Mabira forest to Mehta for sugarcane growing, Ultimate Media interviewed a cross section of people in Kampala to get their views on why the President is insisting on giving away part of Uganda’s most coveted forest. I know President Museveni wants the country to produce enough sugar. But Mabira forest is not the only land in Uganda. Let the government give Mehta land elsewhere.

I don’t know why the President is interested in giving away Mabira forest. Me I don’t support the giveaway of the forest at all.

Some individuals say big people in the government might have got money from Mehta. Though am not so sure I cannot rule out the allegation because of the government insistence on its proposal.

I don’t know the reason exactly; but we rather miss sugar than losing our forest.

These people want our Buganda Kingdom to be a desert like some other areas in the country. Let them grow sugarcanes in their districts.

Me I cannot talk on his (President) behalf, let him come out and explain to the public since the forest in question is a public asset.

Whatever reason, we cannot allow Mabira forest to be cleared for sugarcane growing. Sugarcanes can grow anywhere in Uganda but Mabira was put where it by natural selection.

His reason could have been to produce more sugar to bring back his voters who are complaining of high prices of sugar. But I think since the public has refused the give away of Mabira, the President will withdraw. Otherwise I’m part of those who do not support the Mabira forest give-away.

The only reason I have heard in the media is that Museveni wants to give Mehta to increase the production of sugar otherwise me I don’t know any other reason he wants to give the forest land away. But it is the worst this government will have done to degrade one of the biggest natural forests in East Africa. Let Mehta encourage more out-growers to grow sugarcanes. This will even help in job creation.

I do not know exactly why President Museni wants to give away Mabira forestland but he should be having his selfish interest because as a leader giving away such forest you would be killing your people. We are crying of famine due to drought and we clear the forests…no it is unbecoming.
