The Nnabagereka (Queen) of Buganda, Her Royal Highness Sylvia Nagginda Luswata, commenced an official visit to the United States of America on 23rd August 2010.  During this visit the Nnabagereka will meet with Baganda and Ugandans in the Diaspora, hold key media engagements, as well as deliver a much anticipated Key Note address at the 2010 Uganda North American Association (UNAA) Convention in Washington D.C. on the theme of “Cultural Diversity, Prosperity and Wellness.”

“The Nnabagereka is going to use this tour to highlight the central role of culture in development and to stress the need for tolerance and unity-in-diversity amongst the peoples of Uganda and Africa” said Juliet Ssenteza,  the  Nnabagereka’s  Private Secretary,  “ Her  Royal  Highness  will  be  promoting two charitable causes which are particularly close to her heart – the Uganda Cancer Research Foundation (UCRF), of which Her Royal Highness is the co-founder and Patron, and the Nnabagereka Development Foundation, of which she is the founder and Patron.”

The  Nnabagereka  is  acutely aware  of  the  fact  that  cancer is  the  cause of a  lot of suffering and premature deaths amongst Ugandans yet the disease is given a  low priority owing to the prevalence of parasitic and infectious diseases.  Her Royal Highness therefore intends to: raise awareness of the grim reality of cancer in Uganda; raise funds for research into prevention, surveillance and management of cancer; as well as to call upon oncologists and other medical experts of Ugandan origin living in the United States to do whatever they can to alleviate the suffering of people back home.

The Nnabagereka will interact with Ugandan-American children and youth and relate to them, as well as their  parents,  the  successes of  the Ekisaakate (The Royal  Enclosure) annual youth camps  and other social-cultural projects presently run by the NDF.
