The Minister of State for Agriculture, Henry Bagiire has advised farmers in Uganda to start growing pawpaw on large scale. He says the international demand for Pawpaw juice or papain is on the rise.
Bagiire says papain, which is extracted from the lattice juice of paw-paws is used in many countries as a meat tenderizer. It is also used to make pharmaceutical products.
The Minister says developed countries like South Africa, Mexico, Germany, France, Austria and United Kingdom among others are all asking whether Uganda can provide them with pawpaws or papain.
Bagiire advises the farmers to start growing pawpaw on large scale such that the country can meet the rising demand of papain.
He says the government will train farmers in basic scientific skills of how to get papain juice from pawpaw. The minister says the government is encouraging companies dealing in fruit processing to purchase pawpaw from farmers, process papain and export it.
