The new Global Integrity Report has called upon Uganda to implement its anti corruption and public accountability laws in order to improve service delivery to Ugandans.
The report released today says that although Uganda has a strong legal anti-corruption framework, it struggles to translate the laws into practice.
The report says despite a new mandate that gives the Inspectorate of Government the power to prosecute, this anti corruption agency remains largely ineffective due to limited citizen access and insufficient government funding.
Uganda has however been commended for becoming more successful in implementing its Freedom of Information Act by decreasing the time it takes for the public to access government records.
Uganda's scores for government accountability and political financing increased from its 2007 assessment even though it remained below the required standard.
The major concern raised by the report is the decrease in election integrity with many Ugandans doubting the ability of the Electoral Commission to organize free and fair elections.
The Global Integrity Report is a tool for understanding governance and anti-corruption mechanisms at the national level as written and analysed by local researchers and journalists.
Global Integrity is an independent, non-profit organization tracking governance and corruption trends around the world.
