Officials from the Ituri province of Eastern DR Congo have accused the Ugandan government of supporting rebels who wants to overthrow the government of President Joseph Kabila.
The officials told journalists in Ituri recently that Uganda has established training camps for the two rebel groups headed by Peter Kerim.
Ugandan and Rwandan forces have invaded DR Congo twice, first to topple the government of President Mobutu Tsetseko and the recent invasion to topple the regime of President Laurent Kabila.
Uganda has already indicated that it will contribute military support to the DR Congo government to fight Nkunda forces under the umbrella organization of the great lakes region.
According to Uganda stabilizing Congo will mark the end of the LRA rebels who are currently hiding in the Congolese National Park of Garamba.
But Uganda’s army spokesman for west Nile region Robert Kamara has denied the allegations, saying they are baseless and meant to shade Uganda in bad light.
Fighting between the DR Congo government forces and the rebel forces headed by the renegade general Laurent Nkunda has displaced close to a quarter of a million people most of them settling in western Uganda districts.
Meanwhile, Nkunda agreed yesterday to support a United Nations peace process for Eastern Congo while meeting the UN special envoy to DR Congo, former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo.
