Members of Parliament on the Foreign Affairs committee have pledged to support a campaign for the establishment of a United Nations Parliamentary Assembly (UNPA).
The campaign, which was launched by the committee for a democratic United Nations in 2007, is aimed at creating a global body that embraces all nations to meet and discuss global issues affecting then.
The campaign chairman, Andreas Bummel, told MPs today that the assembly will act as a platform for MPs to give the underprivileged a voice on the global level without going through the bureaucracy that citizens tend to face when raising issues with political leaders.
Bummel says that the world is facing many challenges such as economic instability, climatic change and extreme poverty, among others, whose solutions can be found through more decision making at international levels.
He says that the seats to the UN Parliamentary Assembly will initially consist of delegates of national and regional parliaments. He adds that with time, direct elections will be held to elect delegates to represent countries at the Assembly.
Bummel called upon the United Nations General Assembly to support the establishment of the Parliamentary Assembly since it will be beneficial to all UN member states, which possess a national Parliament.
Committee chairman, Lule Mawiya promised to sell the idea to all Uganda’s Members of Parliament so that MPs can support the campaign.
Individual MPs from 130 countries worldwide have already joined the campaign for a United Nations Parliamentary Assembly (UNPA) at the UN.
