The Masaka District Veterinary officer Lawrence Mayiga has warned people against pork consumption due to the outbreak of swine fever in the country. The disease has already been confirmed in Kibaale and Masaka districts.
He says people should not consume pork not properly cooked and not properly inspected by health officials to avoid contracting the disease.
Reports from Kibaale district indicate that three people have already been admitted in hospital as a result of being infected with the disease. They are suspected to have got the disease through getting in contact with infected animals or eating meat of infected animals.
Mayiga told journalists that the government has already put a quarantine to control the movement of animals in the affected districts to avoid it from spreading to other areas of the country. The disease is highly contagious.
He says the affected districts have already started sensitization campaigns to educate people on the dangers of the disease, treatment and control among others.
Pork remains a popular delicacy in most parts of the country and mostly consumed in bars.
Meanwhile, analysts blame the government for the spread of such diseases because of their failure to enforce proper sanitation procedures in meat butcheries.
