The Chairperson of Uganda Parliamentary Forum on Food, Security, Population and Development, Dr. Chris Byomunsi has called for budget cuttings to increase money for the health sector.
Byomunsi wants the government of Uganda to double the budget for the health sector to about 970 billion shillings.
While reading Uganda’s National budget for 2009/10, the Minister of Finance, Syda Bumba allocated 480.45 billion shillings to the health sector.
Byomunsi is concerned that the health sector is marginalized yet it should be the first priority sector for the country. He was speaking at the Parliamentary Building in Kampala.
The MP says the country’s programme of Prosperity for All will not be realized when the health sector is poorly funded.
Byomunsi suggests that at least 30% of the country’s budget should be allocated to health. According to the 2009/10 Uganda’s National budget, the Ministry of Health was allocated about 9%. With a big budget for the health sector, the MP says the medical staff can be paid better salaries and enough drugs stocked in hospitals.
