The Inspector General of Police, Maj. Gen. Kale Kayihura has said that internal conflicts in Great Lakes Region Countries are caused due to the existence of small arms and light weapons.
Kayihura says that the Great Lakes Region has for the last 10 years been affected by the violent internal conflicts and wars.
He says that the main tool used in these actions of violence and political unrest is small arms and light weapons.
Kayihura who was addressing a press conference at Uganda Media Centre in Kampala urged the Great Lakes Region to vigorously implement the Nairobi protocol signed in March 2000 to work on stopping flow of small weapons.
The signatories to this protocol were Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Kenya, Rwanda, Seychelles, Uganda and Tanzania among others.
He says that the government of Uganda established an inter agency body called the National Focal Point (NFP) on small arms in 2001, which has managed to destroy a number of small arms and light weapons.
