Most residents of Kalangala district among other fishing communities in Uganda fear to undergo voluntary HIV/Aids testing.

The Director General of Uganda Aids Commission, Dr. Kihumuro Apuuli says the commission is doing whatever is possible to convince the members of the fishing communities to accept voluntary counseling and testing for HIV.

Addressing the political and opinion leaders of Kalangala district today at the district headquarters, Apuuli said the negative responce of the fishers has greatly affected the fight against HIV/Aids in the area.

He also says that many people among the fishing communities in Uganda can not access HIV related services due to long distances from their homes. Some people need to sail over 20 miles to access health services.

The Director urges the government to establish more health centers and units in fishing corridors to take health services nearer to the people.
