Uganda’s Minister of Trade and Industry, Maj. Gen. Kahinda Otafiire has said Uganda’s economy is threatened by the citizens’ excessive consumption of alcohol.
Otafiire says according to the recent United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) report, Uganda is among the World’s top drinking countries with about 170 million litres of alcohol consumed by Ugandans annually.
Otafiire says many Ugandans instead of going for work spend much of the day and night time in bars only wakes up to condemn government that it is not stopping poverty. He was speaking to Ultimate Media during an interview in Kampala.
Otafiire also appealed to Ugandans to burying people reported in the different parts of the country having died due to over boozing. The Minister says such people should only be buried by their immediate relatives as the rest of people are busy working.
Otafiire says many families in Uganda are living miserably due to the effects of alcohol. He advises Ugandans especially the youth to engage in economic activities rather than sleeping in nightclubs and drinking joints.
Otafiire says the government of Uganda is soon tabling a bill that once passed into law will have all the drunkards arrested. He says the bill is intended to check on over drinking in Uganda.
