The MPs on the public accounts committee have vowed to gain access to the classified accounts of the defense and security ministries so that misuse of taxpayer’s money can be reduced.
According to the law, expenditures on the classified accounts of the ministry of defense are not supposed to be monitored by MPs because according to the army it endangers the security of the country.
The MP for Kawempe South Hon. Sebuliba Mutumba told journalist in Kampala today that expenditure procedures of the classified accounts have received many queries even from the auditor general’s office.
Mutumba who is also a member of the Public accounts Committee of parliament (PAC) indicated amending the law governing classified accounts so that MPs can monitor its funds will ensure proper management of defence ministry funds.
Yesterday MPs of the public accounts committee clashed with ministry of defense officials over the loss of over 3billion shillings in the controversial sale of an army helicopter.
The acting permanent secretary in the ministry of defense Rossette Byengoma claims that the missing money was banked on the classified accounts in the bank of Uganda.
