Africans in America have woken up to a newly crowned queen, the most beautiful, intelligent and talented African woman, Miss Nigeria Mfonobong Essiet. The 22 year old Biomedical science student faced a stiff competition from 19 other beautiful women from all over Africa with Miss Sierra Leone, Elizabeth MBalu Conteh coming second and Miss Eritrea, Yordanos Gidey coming third.

The glamorous night was well attended by a huge crowd from different parts of USA and Africa. There was a presence of rich cultural dressing from different African nations. The show was opened by the Queen Mother of Ghana, presided over by the chief of Cameroon and specially hosted by Congolese Super Model Noella Cousaris. However, the highlight of the evening was the electrifying performances by the multi-talented Kenyan musician Bamboo.

According to the CEO/Founder of Miss Africa USA Scholarship pageant Lady Kate Njeuma, all twenty African delegates were African queens on the night and all had a potential of representing Africa but only one stood out. When asked what she thought of the winner, Lady Kate answered with great enthusiasm, "Mfonobong Essiet was brilliant, when the curtains came down, she was ready, completely cultural, a true African woman from the manner in which she carried herself. She added, "Miss Nigeria has a great personality to match her beauty and she will definitely do a fantastic job to push our vision of educating African children. She's a wonderful ambassador who is already a community leader who travels to different parts of Africa hosting shows and seminars for good causes and will represent Africa well in the USA and beyond."

Apart from winning the judges' hearts and being acclaimed Miss Africa USA, Mfonobong Essiet walked away with a long list of prizes including, an Elegant Queen jewellery set By Bling Queens Fashions of Las Vegas, a Comprehensive Scholarship Package, Runway Africa Cover Model 2008 (sponsored by Runway Africa), a sponsored trip to Africa: on humanitarian project for children, a major role in a movie project by Shrine Motion Pictures LLC and many more throughout her year of reign.

In an earlier interview with UGPulse.com, the energetic and multifaceted beauty expressed her desire to reach a wider audience as a spokes model in improving the African society and building a better sense of community both abroad and in the U.S.A. She said, "I have chosen to see success, a better society, progression, and so much more positive aspects of life. Africa, my home, is not only a location on a map. It is a culturally diverse, very exquisite, and physically immense continent. African people have a strong sense of hospitality and such a rich history that amazes most."

We wish Miss Mfonobong Essiet all the best in her endeavours during her year of reign. Please come back and read more on the new Miss Africa USA as we bring you an update of her progress.
