Sera Lubowa was born September 11, 1986 in Kampala, Uganda to Dorothy and Asumani Lubowa and grandparents Daniel and Joyce Sebugwawo. At a very young age, Sera was determined to become something BIG! "My mom says that I never played with toys. I was always drawn to the radio and entertained myself," she says. When she was 6 years old, Sera moved to Paris, France and then to Texas to live with her mother who had moved away earlier. At age 7, Sera was enrolled in Kedal Dance Studio to learn Ballet and Jazz. "School was fun for me. I always woke up early from the excitement of going to my classes. I loved learning and being in a new world kept me alert! Dancing is what centered me - in dance class, I could be free!" says Sera.

Can you please tell us briefly about your background?
I'm both Rwandan and Ugandan so I represent more than one country. My Step father is from Burundi so that adds another country. I was never a shy girl. I was quiet when I needed to be and ALWAYS made good grades. I have a Performing Arts degree in Dance, Singing, and Acting and now I'm going for my Nursing. I'm a Secretary for Homeland Truck lines. I have four siblings and I live in Fort Worth, TX. I'm also a Model and future Movie Star!!!

What was your drive behind entering this prestigious beauty pageant?
Just like the other girls, I wanted to represent my country in America in a positive way, to break stereotypes and show the rest of the world the beauty of Africa.

You must have a lot of passion for your country of origin to enter Miss Africa USA, what is it you love most about it?
I love the array of colors and people. We have one of the most diverse people. You will find EVERY color and background in Uganda. The food is great and the country is growing and improving at a fast speed.

What book are you currently reading?
Zipporah by Marek Halter. Great Author!

What's the one thing you would never do without?
Chicken! LOL... I LOVE CHICKEN!!!!

What are your favourite spots in Africa?
I love Lake Victoria. It's close to home and is surrounded by other countries like Kenya and Tanzania. When you go to the shore, you will find many different cultures. I'm also fascinated by Freetown, Sierra Leone. I would LOVE to visit the town and experience its power for myself, it is rich in history. Another place I would like to visit is Cairo, Egypt. I love the culture, the beauty and the mystery that surrounds Egypt.

How would you describe beauty in the eyes of an African woman?
My definition of a beautiful African woman is a woman who will stand up for what is right, a woman who listens to her heart and makes her own judgements according to her faith. I admire women who have a point of view and let the world hear it. Looks have NOTHING to do with beauty.

How would you sell Africa as an ambassador to USA and the rest of the world?
I would encourage people to look beyond what they show on National Geographic. For people to invest more in the land and the bright people of Africa, for the rest of the world to stop looking down on us. I would have Television shows that reveal the TRUE beauty and richness of Africa. I want them to see what I see.

What are your inspirations and what do you aspire to be?
I draw my inspirations from my Mother, Grandmother Joyce and my whole huge family. I aspire to be a HUGE star and help Africa through my fame and fortune.

Why do you think you should be crowned Miss Africa United States?
I would like to be crowned in order to show a different side of beauty, to get exposure for my country, and to be a role model to my sisters and other people out there who have struggled and are struggling.

Have you got any beauty tips you would like to share with UGPulse readers?
You know how your mother always said to "take care of your skin"? Well...listen to her. It will all show in the end. And PLEASE be yourself...there is no one more beautiful than who you are.

About the Author

Pauline Long, UGPulse Beauty Editor, is a Kenyan based in the UK. She is the founder and CEO of Miss East Africa UK and Pol Management (a celebrity and events management company). She is also the co-founder of Miss West Africa. Her beauty pageant Miss East Africa UK helps raise funds and create awareness for the plight of the underprivileged East African children. Pauline is also the co-founder of Big 5 charity: a charity for the African girl child.

Pauline was born into a family of fashion designers with her mum being the pioneer and her role model. She acquired the desire and eyes for style from her mother who has been in the industry for just over forty years. During her late teens whilst living in Kenya, she worked in her mother's hairdressing salon and boutique. However her writing skills started off as a hobby in 2002 when she took time off work to become a fulltime mother and look after her two children. She soon took up the challenge of writing scripts which she hopes one day may turn into blockbuster movies or television dramas.

Currently, Pauline writes for various publications including Europe's leading African newspaper -Africa News and The African Channel. She's also part of the team publishing the new Karama Umuntu magazine. As a researcher and presenter for 601TV, Pauline presented for 601tv at the Alternative London Fashion Week in March, Europe's largest bridal show in April and in the same month she had one to one interviews on behalf of 601tv with various Ugandan top musicians including Bobi Wine, Blue 3*, Chagga, Nubian, Iryn, Buchaman, comedian Amarula family. This was when they toured the UK to perform at the Fire in the city gig.
